Greetings Math Students,

Here is the work from a Thursday:

Math:

*Unique day...we had an assembly from 9:45-10:30, so the PAPAYA group did not have Math today.
So...the homework for Kiwis and Mangoes is pages 49 and 50 (we're working on Story problems)  Those groups will not have homework over the weekend.

Papaya group will get the lesson tomorrow, but they will need to do the homework for MONDAY!!!

We talked today about 4 things that can happen in a story problem.  Think of it as a big of a Goldilocks and The Three Bears concept.

1.  Sometimes we have TOO MUCH information.  Cross the extra out!
2.  Sometimes we DON'T HAVE ENOUGH/TOO LITTLE information.  We cannot even answer these problems.
3.  Sometimes the information is JUST RIGHT!!!  Love those...easy!
4.  Sometimes there are hidden questions, where they don't come right out and say it, but you need to infer what operation to use.

Check'em out.  Lot's of fun.

Greetings Math Students,

Here is the work for a Tuesday:

*All groups:  pages 45 and 46

*Note that from here forward any time the direction says to use a "particular method" students may simply use the method that fits them BEST!

The other methods are fine and all, but frankly redundant and it really doesn't matter if you memorize them.

Have a great night.

Greetings Math Students,

Today, you have been given a  BRAND NEW challenge:

We are finally looking to carpet our hallways at Peach Plains Elementary School.  This is exciting since this will potentially help to keep the halls quieter, but also provide more comfort for all.

Here is the challenge...the fourth grade students need to calculate several numbers for us to move forward with this project.

1.  How much total area needs to be covered by carpet in our hallways?

This can be done in several ways, but you as a small group need to work to figure out which way will be best for you.

2.  What type of carpet would be best for our hallways?

You'll need to do some shopping here.

3.  What is the best price we can get?

4.  What will the final cost for the project be?

Best of luck 4th graders...we're counting on you!

Sincerely,

Mr. k

Greetings Math Students,

Here is the work for a Monday.

 Math:  H and R pages 35 and 36
(Kiwi group, does not need to do 7 on page 35 or the Stretch your thinking, we'll tackle those in class)

Please look at the example on page 35 for a great model of the Area Method of multiplication.  We are continuing to focus on place value.

*I introduced the "traditional" multiplication method to the Mango group.  They must do #2 with the area model method, but they have the choice from there forward.  Tomorrow I'll introduce that method to the other groups.

Check out this example for the Area Model of Multiplication

Take care.

Greetings Math Students,

Here was the work from a Thrusday:

H and R pages 33 and 34

*We're currently working on the process of pulling multiplication problems apart to better understand them.  We want to be able to understand the place value of each number in the multiplication.

Example:

40 x 70  (4 x 10) x (7 x 10)
              (4 x 7) x (10 x 10)
               28 x 100
               2, 800

Also...understand the progression of zeros

2 x 6 = 12
2 x 60 = 120
2 x 600 = 1,200

Go get'em!

Greetings math students,

*So with the 2 hour delay this AM we did Math in our own rooms.

This was the LAST lesson before the Test Friday.

*All groups should be working on pages 25 and 26 for Thursday, since we're in Lansing tomorrow.

Thursday I'll be going over the test with the kids and giving them a short practice test as well.  It'll be a great study guide for Friday.

Take care.
